Why Timers Are Good for Your Classroom

time

My first year as a teacher was difficult. The management of my classroom was a mess and my students weren't in a position to be independent. It's been a few years. I now teach first grade and put a lot of focus on creating problem solving, independent students. My class is now more productive , and the school community is stronger!

1.Supporting

Timers give students clear expectations regarding managing their time. With modeling and practice students will become more self-sufficient. Timers give a visual indication that matches the time expectations. Timers can be a visual aid that helps teachers adhere to the time frame and students stay on task. Students are more aware of the time they have to complete their work and the timer may make them feel more motivated.

2. The Future and Life Skills

It doesn't matter if it's always easy or not, timelines and deadlines are a part of life. The provision of timer countdown for my students in my first grade helps build responsibility and discipline in my class. My students have often informed me that the timer is stopped accidentally, when there are more than x minutes left or if they require additional time. I am grateful that my students are able to request additional time when needed. Students can request additional time and the timer also lets them know when work will close. I also notice my students doing their best at the tasks that are mandatory (must do) as soon as they can, so that they can move on to choice center items. Making use of timer online has taught valuable lessons and life skills. The concept of accountability, independence and the concept of time.

3. Borders

The classroom is defined by using timers. It is work time when the timer goes on. The end of the timer signals the start of a transition. The timer signals that the task is due to be completed. They can ask for support or additional time if necessary, but it's helpful to identify and label the time so it is never unclear how much time there is to work on something.

4. Community

A strong class community is essential for life-long learning and academic success. I've found that using timers and creating more self-sufficient students has built an atmosphere of community in my classroom. My students now are more aware of their time. They are able to recognize when they require more time to complete an activity and can ask for assistance or help from a friend if needed. My students are able to solve problems in various ways. My students are held accountable for their actions as well as their work. My students are concerned about their classmates and support them when needed to ensure that they have what they need as well. Although these words, like accountability and independence can be intimidating but they are achievable at the elementary level with the proper help. My students are extremely responsible and have a sense of responsibility and respect for each other.

Establish a sense of community and culture in your classroom. It is important to establish a sense of independence in the classroom. Establish the expectations and the routines you would like for your students.
